Astoria Performing Arts Center on Raisin: The Musical
Join artistic director Dev Bondarin and executive director Jessica Bathurst of the Astoria Performing Arts Center as they dicuss their upcoming production of Raisin, based on Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun. Dev and Jessica will be discussing the process of bringing a musical to life, why they chose Raisin and what goes into adapting a play into a musical.
Dev and Jessica will be joined in discussion by Cheryl Davis, a playwright and musical theater writer who's work has been produced at APAC.
Raisin is a musical adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry’s revolutionary A Raisin in the Sun, and has a book co-written by the executor of her literary estate, Robert Nemiroff. In segregated 1950s Chicago, Walter Lee Younger and his mother Lena fight over the spending of insurance money. He wants to start a business with friends, while she is eager to move the family out of the south side and into Clybourne Park. Pulsing with the musical beat of the city, Raisin depicts a black family’s struggle in the face of change.
For the evening, attendees who purchase a copy of A Raisin in the Sun (10% off) will receive a discount code for $6 off of tickets to APAC's production of Raisin, running May 4-27.
