Feminist Book Club: Out by Natsuo Kirino

Join us at the Astoria Bookshop for our new Feminist Mosaic Reading Group. Each month we’ll read a book and examine it through the lens of modern feminism. For June we will be discussing Out by Natsuo Kirino. All women and allies, teens and up, are welcome to join this group. We will also be accepting diapers and feminine hygiene products to donate to local women's shelters.

Over the course of the series, we’ll read books from a variety of women writers and use them as a springboard to explore a wide range of women’s issues, including reproductive rights, equity in the workplace and school, intersectional feminism, and body image and self-care.

This mesmerizing novel tells the story of a brutal murder in the staid Tokyo suburbs, as a young mother who works the night shift making boxed lunches strangles her abusive husband and then seeks the help of her coworkers to dispose of the body and cover up her crime. The coolly intelligent Masako emerges as the plot's ringleader, but quickly discovers that this killing is merely the beginning, as it leads to a terrifying foray into the violent underbelly of Japanese society.
